Noticing nature

A little more attention

A familiar path can hold small discoveries. A little attention is often enough to begin.

Take a colour along

Before your walk, choose a colour. Look for its different shades: the green of a hedge, an almost grey leaf, a bright patch of light. There is no need to collect anything. The small task may already change what you notice.

Listen to the landscape

Stop somewhere safe or take a seat. Which sounds are close and which are far away? You might hear wind, footsteps, water or traffic. For a moment, simply distinguish one sound from another. A city has a landscape of sounds too.

Spend longer with one detail

Choose something visible from the path: bark, a stone, the edge of a leaf. First look at its shape, then its surface, then the light and shade. If you take photographs, pause before pressing the shutter. What do you want the picture to show?

Find your own approach

These tasks are invitations. If hearing or seeing is unavailable to you, or feels tiring today, choose something else: air on your skin or the feeling of sitting in a familiar place. Change or skip any exercise. There is no target and no correct number of discoveries.
