Give grazing animals space

Stay calm and leave room

The Austrian Alpine Club advises against feeding, touching or startling grazing animals and recommends keeping your distance. Mothers protect their young. If the path is narrow or blocked, do not squeeze through a herd; choose a safe alternative.

Take extra care with a dog

BFU directs hikers to specific guidance on suckler cows. The Austrian Alpine Club recommends keeping dogs close on a lead and avoiding cow herds with calves where possible. If a cattle attack is imminent, release the dog immediately so it can escape. This is an emergency exception, not general permission to let dogs roam.
