A guest in nature

  • Watch from a distance

Do not feed, touch or follow wildlife. If animals react to you, calmly give them more space.

  • Look and leave in place

Leave plants and natural objects where they belong. Do not taste or experimentally touch unfamiliar things.

  • Respect the paths

Use permitted paths. Observe closures and local protection rules.

  • Take everything home

Fruit peel, food scraps and small pieces of packaging belong back in your bag too.

  • Leave quiet and space

Keep noise low and let others pass. Follow local dog rules and keep dogs away from wildlife.

  • Picnic without flames

Choose food that needs no stove. Observe current local fire restrictions and wildfire guidance.

Before you set out

  • Route and people

Match the route, difficulty and return to everyone. Allow time for breaks and a margin.

  • Weather and daylight

Check the forecast and closures. Leave enough daylight for the return journey.

  • Water and protection

Bring water, food, suitable shoes, weather protection and sun protection.

  • Navigation and help

Be able to open your offline map; charge your phone. Bring first aid and personal medication.

  • Share and adapt your plan

Tell someone your route and return time. Reconsider when uncertain or when conditions change.

Turning back is part of it. A good walk needs no summit.

A starting list for easy day outings. Demanding routes need additional skills and equipment. Local rules take precedence.
