Nature’s small mysteries

Life beneath the leaves

Something that has fallen has not simply disappeared.

Soil is a habitat

Soil hosts organisms that break down dead organic material, making nutrients available again. A fallen leaf belongs to a cycle, even when the change is slow and hard to see.

Wood belongs to the cycle too

The Woodland Trust describes decaying wood as habitat that also returns nutrients. Our observation idea: compare different stages side by side. There is no need to rummage through leaf litter or break wood apart.
